Horizons is a small k-12 independent, democratic boarding and day school with approximately 110 students located in downtown Atlanta. Our goals are to expand students' confidence in their abilities, to help students make the transition from external motivation to self-motivation and to promote academic excellence.

Horizons offers a college preparatory curriculum, as well as classes in visual and performing arts. Located on four wooded acres in the heart of an urban environment, we take advantage of our intown location with frequent field trips and student internships. The school is in the pleasant residential district of Lake Claire, within walking distance to public transportation acnd the Little Five Points neighborhood. The boarding program is small and supports a family atmosphere.

Horizons' intent is to develop in students those values and skills which ensure maximum opportunities. Students learn real-life skills through active participation in the classroom, as well as in other aspects of the school. They learn responsibility, decision-making skills and problem-solving skills through active participation in the management of the school community. Such a leadership role empowers students, giving them the knowledge that they have control of personal decisions and interpersonal interactions.

Horizons' boarding program is as unique as the rest of our school. The boarding program is small (fewer than 20 students) and houses students from overseas and from the United States. Students share double rooms along our gender-segregated hallways. Live-in dorm parents are on duty 24 hours a day to supervise and assist students. The boarding program is arranged family style. Each student has cleaning duty and cooking duty. There is a variety of easy-to-prepare foods and ready-made meals for boarding students for breakfast and lunch. Evening meals are made in the communal kitchen by the dorm parent and students who are on cooking duty that evening and shared by all in the dining room. Our students form life-long friendships studying, living and working together.

Students are expected to subscribe to the school's honor code. The Honor Code commits a student to practicing responsibility, honesty, respect and cooperation in the Horizons community and is signed upon acceptance to the school.
